Hero Of Fun
Probably the only video game I still think about, aside from maybe Earthbound (because of Ken and his book) and Braid (shout out Kurt). Also, these are the only three video games I’ve played in the last ten years, I think, because Tetris and NBA JAM on my iPhone don’t count. I think what attracts me to these three is what attracts me to certain novels: a story to participate in—and not just because I’m manipulating characters with a keyboard (as it is now)—in the way that the very act of reading can feel like what is truly animating certain stories. After all, both MGS and Earthbound are very text-heavy games, and Braid inherits a good deal of simple, elegant rules from those prior generations to include you in determining its path, however scripted, while promoting agency in the gamer.
Earlier than the gruesome, perfect finale to La Cérémonie, Jaqueline Bisset and Valentin Merlet watch Wedding in Blood, a Chabrol film from 1973 starring Michel Piccoli, that’s all about class warfare, too, but yet more oblique.
